Student Stipends

Three Students Awarded Travel Stipend at the 2014 Annual Meeting

The WSFS awards three student travel stipends of $100 each to students coming to the conference to deliver a paper. To qualify, a student must indicate they are applying for the stipend, submit their abstracts before the deadline, and submit both a 100-150 word abstract for publication in the program and a 350 word abstract in which the paper is described in more detail with special attention to the conceptual point of the paper. Some preference is given to students who come from afar and incur significant travel expenses in coming to the meeting.

This year's recipents were Eric Morales from Indiana University ("Dancing in the Diaspora: The Pan-Polynesian Luau and the Performance of Identity"), Anastasiya Astapova from the University of Tartu, Estonia ("Miron Vitebsky: From Urban Legend to National Movement", and Jeff Howard, from Idaho State University ("Translation as ‘Cultural Brokering’: Applied Folklore, Authenticity, and the Translation of a Foggian Children's Rhyme"). As in previous years, the awards were given by WSFS's Business Manager and Executive Editor, Elliott Oring.
